Jaguar MODEL Guide
Model Guide -
Brief Overview:
- The XJ6 model has a much "plainer" style wood than the more luxurious Vanden Plas. The wood in the XJ6 DID get better (more burled) year after year. Thus, the 1986/87 XJ6's wood is NOT bad at all. A more "straight-grained wood was used" in the XJ6.
The DASH of a 1987 XJ6.
- The XJ6 BEFORE the year 1986 does not have the brake light up by the rear windshield; thus 1986-87 DID have one fitted from JAGUAR Factory (Meaning, the previous owner might have had one installed on a previous Series 3 year).
- The 86/87 XJ6 has wood along the doors (*NOT TO BE CONFUSED with EVERY year of the Vanden Plas. The wood on the XJ6 doors are surrounded by the "same door color" vinyl, NOT leather like the VDP*) and also contains the wood panel down by the gearshift (**IF you KNOW you are buying a 86/87 XJ6 and it DOES NOT have the wood by the gearshifter {LIKE MY 1987 does not-but it is now replaced with WOOD-, the previous owner replaced it with a black panel!!!} just know it SHOULD**).
- The electric mirror controls are located by the window on the driver's side door.
- The REAR SEATS of the XJ6 model are a "bench style". In other words, there are NO individual seating in the back, just one long "bench".
Brief Overview:
- The Series 3 Vanden Plas by Jaguar was introduced in 1982.
- Vanden Plas models contain the wood strips on the doors surrounded by a backing of black leather!
The cabin of a 86 VDP.
- The VDP has long-haired "GOAT FUR" floor carpets in the back and the front-right footwells.
- The rear seats are 'bucket seats' (contour to your body...similar to the front seats).
- The mirror controls are located on the map storage unit on the driver's door.
- In the rear, there are FOLD-DOWN reading lamps.
- The VDP has box-wood inlays on the doors surrounded by black leather.
- Usually, the wood on the fascia is much more 'burled'; darker, richer texture than the XJ6.
- Really depends on what the PO did {meaning this is an OPTION}; but the gearshifter can be a "WOODEN KNOB" instead of the black.
LIGHTS:
AMERICAN (US) CARS:
The US Version of the Series 3 Jaguars had the SAME sized (5.75") front headlamps in BOTH positions.
EUROPEAN CARS:
HOWEVER, the European Cars had LARGER (7") headlamps on the outer sockets. *MANY Series 3 owners (US) convert their cars to have the larger 7" Headlamps on the outside. I don't really have a preference, I think they both look decent!
